SAA-C03 Exam Guide: Format, Cost and Study Plan

Direct answer: SAA-C03 tests whether you can design secure, resilient, fast and cost-aware architectures on AWS. Plan roughly 60 to 80 study hours over 6 to 8 weeks, with hands-on labs every week. Our voucher costs $48.99 and arrives by email within 12 hours of payment.

What SAA-C03 proves and who should take it

SAA-C03 is the AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate exam. It shows you can choose and combine AWS services to meet requirements for security, reliability, performance and cost. It is a design exam, not a command-memorizing exam.

It suits cloud engineers, system administrators, developers moving into architecture, and anyone who works with AWS accounts daily. AWS does not require another certification first. AWS recommends some hands-on experience designing solutions, and that advice is worth following.

If you are brand new to cloud, start with the CLF-C02 exam guide. It builds the vocabulary that SAA-C03 assumes.

Exam format and domain weights

The exam is commonly described as 65 questions in 130 minutes. Questions are multiple choice (one correct answer) or multiple response (two or more correct answers). Results use a scaled score from 100 to 1,000, and the passing score is 720. Some questions are unscored trial items, and you cannot tell which ones.

The exam guide splits content into four domains:

Domain

Weight

What it covers in practice

Design Secure Architectures

30%

IAM, KMS encryption, VPC security groups, network ACLs, data protection

Design Resilient Architectures

26%

Multi-AZ, Auto Scaling, decoupling with SQS and SNS, disaster recovery

Design High-Performing Architectures

24%

Storage and database choice, caching, CloudFront, scaling compute

Design Cost-Optimized Architectures

20%

Pricing models, storage classes, right-sizing, data transfer costs

Security and resilience together are 56% of the exam. Spend your time there first.

AWS can change exam details, so read the current exam guide on the AWS certification site before you book.

Cost: voucher price, delivery and refunds

Our SAA-C03 voucher costs $48.99 USD (price as listed on 2026-11-03). One voucher covers one exam attempt. AWS has historically listed this exam at $150 USD, but the official fee can change, so check it on the AWS certification page before you compare prices.

Here is how our policy works:

  • The voucher code is emailed within 12 hours of payment. It also appears in your account.

  • You can cancel an order for a full refund before delivery.

  • A delivered code is non-refundable unless the test provider rejects it as invalid, already used or expired on first use.

  • If that happens, contact support within 14 days with your order number and a screenshot. We replace or refund the code.

Full terms are on the refund policy and delivery policy pages.

An 8-week study plan with weekly hours

Plan about 8 to 10 hours per week, roughly 60 to 80 hours in total. If you already run production workloads on AWS, you may compress this to 4 weeks. Hands-on time should be at least a third of every week.

Week

Focus

Hours

Do not move to week 8 until you understand why each wrong answer is wrong. Memorizing answer keys does not transfer to the real exam.

A worked example: how to eliminate answers

Most SAA-C03 questions describe a requirement and ask for the best design. Here is a typical pattern.

Scenario: A web app runs on one EC2 instance with a MySQL database. The company wants it to survive the loss of one Availability Zone, with the least operational effort.

  1. Underline the constraints: survive an AZ failure, least operational effort.

  2. Remove options that fail a constraint. A single instance with nightly EBS snapshots does not survive an AZ loss quickly.

  3. Check each remaining option for extra work. Self-managed MySQL replication across AZs works but adds effort.

  4. Pick the managed option: an Application Load Balancer, an Auto Scaling group across two AZs, and RDS Multi-AZ.

A common trap here is the read replica. Read replicas help with read scaling, while Multi-AZ is the feature built for automatic failover. Reading the constraint words carefully decides many questions.

Hands-on labs worth doing

Use a personal AWS account, set a billing budget first, and delete resources when you finish. These commands practice core ideas:

aws s3api create-bucket --bucket my-saa-lab-bucket-12345 --region us-east-1
aws s3api put-bucket-versioning --bucket my-saa-lab-bucket-12345 --versioning-configuration Status=Enabled
aws ec2 create-vpc --cidr-block 10.0.0.0/16
aws ec2 describe-security-groups --query "SecurityGroups[].GroupId"

Bucket names must be globally unique, so change the example name. After each lab, try to break it. Remove a route, block a port, stop an instance, and see what fails.

For a deeper next step in automation and pipelines, see the DOP-C02 exam guide.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping the official exam guide. It lists task statements for each domain. Many candidates treat it as optional, and that is a mistake.

  • Watching videos without building anything. Recognition is not recall. Build each service at least once.

  • Ignoring cost questions. At 20%, cost optimization is too large to guess. Learn S3 storage classes and when data transfer charges apply.

  • Choosing the most powerful service. The exam usually rewards the simplest managed option that meets the requirement.

  • Missing keywords. Words like "least operational overhead", "most cost-effective" and "highly available" change the right answer.

  • Relying on brain dumps. Leaked question sets break exam rules and can get your certification revoked. They also teach answers, not design.

  • Rushing multiple-response questions. Count how many answers the question asks for before you select.

On exam day and after you pass

You can usually take the exam at a test center or online with a proctor. Test your computer, room and ID before the day. Flag hard questions and return to them; with 130 minutes you have roughly two minutes per question.

After you pass, add the badge to your resume and LinkedIn profile. AWS associate certifications have typically been valid for three years, so plan to recertify before expiry and confirm the current period in your AWS Certification account.

Common next steps are the DVA-C02 developer exam or a professional-level architecture exam. More options are in our cloud certifications category.

Questions about this topic

Is SAA-C03 hard for beginners?

It is demanding if you have never used AWS. The questions test design judgment, not just definitions. Beginners usually do better after completing the Cloud Practitioner level first and building small projects for several weeks.

Do I need to code to pass SAA-C03?

No coding is required. You should read simple JSON, such as IAM policies, and understand basic CLI commands. The exam focuses on choosing the right services and settings.

Are free practice exams enough?

They help for spotting weak areas, but quality varies. Use the official AWS practice question set first, then add one reputable full-length practice exam. Always review the reasoning behind each answer, not just the score.

Can I retake SAA-C03 if I fail?

Yes. AWS sets a waiting period between attempts, and each new attempt needs a new voucher or payment. Check the current retake rules on the AWS certification site, then spend the wait fixing the domains where you scored lowest.

Should I learn every AWS service before the exam?

No. Focus on the core services in the exam guide: IAM, VPC, EC2, S3, RDS, DynamoDB, load balancing, Auto Scaling, SQS, SNS and CloudFront. Knowing when to use each one matters more than knowing every feature.

What if my voucher code does not work?

Contact our support within 14 days of delivery with your order number and a screenshot of the error. If the test provider rejected the code as invalid, already used or expired on first use, we replace or refund it.
