MLA-C01 Exam Guide: Topics, SageMaker Labs and Study Plan

Direct answer: MLA-C01 is the AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer - Associate exam. It tests whether you can build, deploy and operate ML solutions on AWS, mostly with Amazon SageMaker. Plan about 80 hours over 10 weeks, spend most of that time in hands-on labs, and confirm current format details in the official AWS exam guide.

What MLA-C01 proves and who should take it

MLA-C01 is the AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer - Associate exam. It shows you can take an ML model from data to production on AWS and keep it running. It is an engineering exam, not a data science theory test.

It fits cloud engineers, DevOps staff, data engineers and developers who now work with ML workloads. If you only need to understand AI at a business level, start with the AIF-C01 exam guide instead.

AWS expects hands-on experience with Amazon SageMaker and related services. You can pass with less, but you will need more lab time.

Exam format: what to confirm before you book

AWS publishes the exam length, number of questions, passing score and languages in the official MLA-C01 exam guide on the AWS Certification site. Read it first. AWS can update these details, so use the current version rather than a blog post, including this one.

Two habits help whatever the exact format is:

  • Expect unscored questions. Some items on AWS exams are unscored, and you cannot tell which. Treat every question as real.

  • Flag long scenarios. Skip them on the first pass, finish the short questions, then return with the time you saved.

Write down the question count and time limit from the exam guide. Then work out your own minutes-per-question budget before your first timed practice exam.

What the exam covers, topic by topic

The MLA-C01 domains follow the ML lifecycle. The official exam guide lists the domains and their weights. Use those weights to split your study hours. Here is what each area looks like in practice:

  • Data preparation: ingesting data, cleaning it, feature engineering, handling imbalanced classes, and checking data quality. Expect SageMaker Data Wrangler, Glue, S3 and Feature Store.

  • Model development: choosing an algorithm, training, tuning hyperparameters, and evaluating with the right metric. Know when AUC, F1 or RMSE fits the problem.

  • Deployment and orchestration: real-time, serverless, asynchronous and batch inference, plus pipelines and CI/CD for ML.

  • Monitoring and security: drift detection, Model Monitor, IAM roles, VPC isolation, encryption and cost control.

Deployment and monitoring topics are often under-studied. Many candidates skip them because they feel less like "real ML." That is a costly habit.

Cost, voucher price and what you get

Our voucher for this exam costs $48.99 USD. You can buy it on the MLA-C01 voucher page. One voucher covers one exam attempt. Check the AWS Certification site for the current official exam fee.

Here is how delivery and refunds work:

  • The code is emailed within 12 hours of payment. It also appears in your account.

  • You can cancel for a full refund before delivery.

  • A delivered code is non-refundable. The exception is when the test provider rejects it as invalid, already used or expired on first use.

  • In that case, contact support within 14 days with your order number and a screenshot. The code is replaced or refunded.

A 10-week study plan with weekly hours

This plan assumes about 8 hours a week, so roughly 80 hours in total. If you work with SageMaker daily, shorten it to 6 weeks. If you are new to ML, stretch it to 14.

Weeks

Focus

Hours/week

1

Read the official exam guide. Review ML basics: bias, variance, metrics.

6

2-3

Data preparation: S3, Glue, Data Wrangler, Feature Store, class imbalance

8

4-5

Model development: built-in algorithms, training jobs, tuning, evaluation

9

6-7

Deployment: endpoints, inference types, Pipelines, CI/CD

9

8

Monitoring and security: Model Monitor, IAM, VPC, KMS, cost

8

9

Full practice exam, then review every wrong answer

8

10

Weak-area labs and a second timed practice exam

8

A worked example of the review loop

Say you score 62% on your first practice exam. You miss 8 questions, and 5 of them are about inference options. Do not reread everything. Spend the next week building one real-time endpoint, one serverless endpoint and one batch transform job. Then explain in one sentence when you would pick each.

That targeted loop beats another 10 hours of video.

Hands-on labs that matter, and how to avoid surprise bills

Reading about SageMaker is not enough. Build at least one full pipeline: data in S3, a processing step, training, evaluation, and a deployed endpoint.

Endpoints bill while they run. Check for forgotten ones after every lab:

aws sagemaker list-endpoints --status-equals InService
aws sagemaker delete-endpoint --endpoint-name my-endpoint

Also stop idle notebook instances and Studio apps. Set an AWS Budgets alert at a low monthly limit before you start.

If you already hold an associate-level AWS cert, the same habits apply. Our SAA-C03 guide covers the cloud basics that MLA-C01 assumes, such as IAM, VPC and S3.

Common mistakes that cost candidates points

  • Memorizing service names without trade-offs. Questions ask which option is cheapest, fastest or most secure. Know why, not only what.

  • Skipping metrics. Picking accuracy for a rare-event problem is a classic trap. Precision, recall and F1 often fit better.

  • Ignoring security. Many scenarios hinge on a least-privilege IAM role, a private VPC endpoint or KMS encryption.

  • Overbuilding. The correct answer is often the managed, simpler service. Do not choose custom containers when a built-in algorithm fits.

  • Using only practice dumps. Memorized answers fail when the wording changes. Use practice exams to find gaps, then fix them with labs.

  • Rushing the long scenarios. Read the last sentence first. It tells you what the question actually asks.

What to do after you pass

Add the badge to your LinkedIn profile and resume. List the concrete skills too, such as SageMaker Pipelines, drift monitoring and feature engineering.

Note the renewal date shown in your AWS Certification account. From here, a common next step is data engineering with DEA-C01, which pairs well with ML work. See the AI & Machine Learning certifications for related options.

Questions about this topic

Is MLA-C01 harder than the AI Practitioner exam?

Yes, for most people. AIF-C01 tests concepts at a foundational level. MLA-C01 asks you to choose and configure services in realistic engineering scenarios, so hands-on practice matters much more.

Do I need to write code to pass MLA-C01?

You will not write long programs in the exam. You should be able to read short code or configuration, and understand training scripts, pipeline steps and IAM policies well enough to spot a mistake.

Do the unscored questions affect my result?

Some questions on the exam are unscored, and you cannot identify them. Answer every question with the same care, and flag the hard ones rather than guessing early.

Are free MLA-C01 exam guide PDFs enough to pass?

A free PDF outline helps you see the domains and tasks. It will not give you lab skills or practice with scenario questions. Combine it with hands-on SageMaker work and at least two timed practice exams.

What if my voucher code is rejected when I redeem it?

Contact our support within 14 days. Send your order number and a screenshot of the rejection message. If the test provider marked the code invalid, already used or expired on first use, we replace or refund it.

Should I take DEA-C01 before MLA-C01?

It is not required. If your daily work is data pipelines, DEA-C01 can build the data skills that data preparation uses. If you already work with models, go straight to MLA-C01.
