AIF-C01 Exam Guide: AI Practitioner Domains and Study Plan
Direct answer: AIF-C01 (AWS Certified AI Practitioner) is a foundational exam on AI, machine learning, generative AI and responsible AI on AWS. Most beginners can prepare in three to five weeks at 6 to 8 hours a week. Our voucher costs $36.99 and arrives by email within 12 hours of payment.
What AIF-C01 proves and who it is for
AIF-C01 is the AWS Certified AI Practitioner exam. It shows you understand core AI, machine learning (ML) and generative AI ideas, and you know which AWS services fit which job. It does not test whether you can build or train models.
It suits people who work near AI projects but do not code models all day. Think project managers, analysts, sales engineers, cloud support staff, students and career changers. Developers also take it as a first step before the Associate-level ML path.
There is no formal prerequisite. Basic cloud awareness helps, but you can learn it as you go.
Skills measured and domain weights
AWS groups the exam into five domains. The weights below are the commonly published ones. Check the current exam guide on the AWS certification page before you start, because AWS can update it.
Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
1. Fundamentals of AI and ML | 20% |
2. Fundamentals of Generative AI | 24% |
3. Applications of Foundation Models | 28% |
4. Guidelines for Responsible AI | 14% |
5. Security, Compliance, and Governance for AI Solutions | 14% |
Domains 2 and 3 together are about half the exam. If your time is short, put your hours there first.
What each domain looks like in practice
Domain 1: supervised vs unsupervised learning, overfitting, training vs inference, common metrics, and when ML is the wrong tool.
Domain 2: tokens, embeddings, foundation models, prompts, and what generative AI does well or badly.
Domain 3: choosing between prompt engineering, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) and fine-tuning. Also Amazon Bedrock features, model evaluation and cost trade-offs.
Domain 4: bias, fairness, transparency, hallucinations and human review.
Domain 5: IAM, data privacy, encryption, compliance and governance for AI workloads.
Exam format at a glance
These details are commonly published for AIF-C01. Confirm them on the AWS exam page when you book.
Item | Detail |
|---|---|
Exam code | AIF-C01 |
Level | Foundational |
Duration | 90 minutes |
Questions | 65 (50 scored, 15 unscored) |
Question types | Multiple choice and multiple response, plus a few other formats such as ordering or matching |
Passing score | 700 on a scale of 100 to 1000 |
Delivery | Test center or online proctored through the exam provider |
The 700 score is scaled. It is not 70% correct, so do not plan around a raw percentage. You will not know which questions are unscored, so treat all of them seriously.
Cost: list price vs our voucher
AWS has commonly listed foundational exams at around $100 USD, but the exact fee can vary by country and tax, so check the price on the AWS certification page when you book.
Our AIF-C01 voucher is $36.99.
Delivery, redemption and refunds
The code is emailed within 12 hours of payment. It also appears in your account.
You can cancel for a full refund before the code is delivered.
A delivered code is non-refundable. The exception: the test provider rejects it as invalid, already used or expired on first use.
In that case, contact support within 14 days with your order number and a screenshot. We replace or refund the code.
Full terms are on the refund page and the delivery page.
A realistic study plan with weekly hours
The plan below assumes you are new to AI on AWS and can give 6 to 8 hours a week. If you already use Bedrock or SageMaker, cut it to two weeks.
Week | Hours | Focus | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
1 | 6 | Domain 1 and core vocabulary | One page of notes on ML types and metrics |
2 | 7 | Domain 2 and start of Domain 3 | Written list of what tokens, embeddings and context windows are |
3 | 8 | Rest of Domain 3, plus AWS service mapping | Table of service to use case |
4 | 7 | Domains 4 and 5, then timed practice | Two timed 65-question sets, errors logged |
5 (optional) | 4 | Fix weak spots | Retake only the topics you missed |
Free AWS Skill Builder content and the official exam guide are enough to cover the syllabus. Add a free-tier AWS account if you want to try Bedrock hands-on, and watch costs while you do.
Service-to-use-case table to build yourself
Make your own table with at least these rows. Writing it is the study.
Amazon Bedrock: access to foundation models through one API.
Amazon SageMaker: build, train and deploy your own ML models.
Amazon Q: assistant features for business and developer tasks.
Amazon Rekognition, Comprehend, Textract, Transcribe, Polly, Translate, Lex: ready-made AI services for specific tasks.
Amazon Bedrock Guardrails: content and safety controls for model output.
Worked example: choosing prompt engineering, RAG or fine-tuning
This comparison appears in many forms on the exam. Learn the decision, not the buzzwords.
Situation | Best first choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
Output format is wrong or vague | Prompt engineering | Cheapest and fastest to change |
Model must answer from your private, changing documents | RAG | Pulls current data at query time without retraining |
Model must adopt a specific style or domain behavior consistently | Fine-tuning | Changes model behavior using labeled examples |
You need a task that a ready-made service already does (for example text extraction) | A managed AI service | No model work needed |
Example question logic. A company wants a chatbot to answer from HR policy PDFs that change every month. Fine-tuning would need retraining each time. RAG reads the latest documents when asked. So RAG fits.
When two answers look right, pick the one with the least effort, lowest cost and least custom work. Foundational AWS exams commonly reward that.
Common mistakes to avoid
Studying only definitions. The exam asks you to pick a solution for a scenario. Practice the choice.
Ignoring responsible AI and security. Together they are about 28% of the exam. Many people treat them as filler.
Mixing up Bedrock and SageMaker. Bedrock is for using foundation models. SageMaker is for building and training your own.
Memorizing dumps. Leaked question sets are often wrong or outdated, and using them can violate the AWS exam agreement. It can also get your result revoked.
Skipping timed practice. 90 minutes for 65 questions is about 80 seconds each. Practice that pace.
Booking before you score steadily. Aim for consistent practice scores well above your target before you sit the real exam.
Exam-day checklist
Book your slot only after your voucher code has arrived.
Test your system and room if you take it online.
Bring matching ID with the name used on your AWS Certification account.
Flag long questions and return to them. Never leave an answer blank.
Read the last line of each scenario first. It tells you what is being asked.
After you pass
Foundational AWS certifications are commonly valid for three years. Check your AWS Certification account for your exact expiry and renewal rules.
For a next step, the AI & Machine Learning category lists related paths. If you want to build and deploy models, the MLA-C01 voucher covers the Machine Learning Engineer Associate exam. If you lean toward data pipelines, our DEA-C01 guide covers the Data Engineer Associate path.

Questions about this topic
Is AIF-C01 hard for beginners?
It is one of the easier AWS exams because it is foundational and does not require coding. The hard part is the scenario wording, where two answers can look right. Practice choosing the simplest AWS option that fits the need.
Do I need programming or math skills for the AWS AI Practitioner exam?
No programming is required. You should understand ideas like training data, model accuracy and bias in plain terms. You will not be asked to write code or solve equations.
How many times can I retake AIF-C01 if I fail?
AWS sets its own retake rules, which commonly include a waiting period after a failed attempt. Check the current policy on the AWS certification site before you plan a second date.
Are AIF-C01 dumps a good way to prepare?
No. Dumps are often outdated or wrong, and using leaked exam content can break the AWS exam agreement and cancel your result. Official exam guides, Skill Builder and original practice questions are safer.
How soon can I book the exam after buying a voucher?
Our code is emailed within 12 hours of payment and also appears in your account. Once you have it, you can schedule your slot with the test provider. Pick a date that matches your study plan, not just the earliest slot.
