AB-730 Exam Guide: Copilot Skills, Format and Study Plan

The AB-730 exam proves you can use generative AI tools in Microsoft 365 to get business work done, with no coding. It is a 45-minute proctored exam, you need a score of 700 to pass, and our voucher costs $45.00. Here is what it covers and how to prepare.

What AB-730 proves and who it is for

Passing earns the Microsoft Certified: AI Business Professional credential. Microsoft lists it at Beginner level, for the Business User and Administrator roles, under the product Microsoft 365 Copilot.

Microsoft's audience profile expects hands-on use of Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Cowork and pre-built agents. You should also know prompt engineering, context engineering and large language model basics. And you should be comfortable in Outlook, Word, Microsoft Teams, PowerPoint and Excel.

This fits analysts, managers, office staff, consultants and IT admins who support Copilot rollouts. If you build AI apps, this is not the right exam. It is about using AI at work, not building it.

Skills measured and their weights

The official study guide lists the skills measured as of October 20, 2026.

No single area dominates. You cannot skip one and hope to pass on the others.

What each area looks like in practice

• Fundamentals: how Copilot keeps your organization's information private, how context such as Work IQ or web data changes answers, and risks like inaccuracies, prompt injection and over-reliance.

• Prompts and chats: writing effective prompts, choosing a model, saving, scheduling and sharing prompts, renaming or deleting chats, and using Notebooks.

• Content and collaboration: connectors, images and charts, work across Word, Excel and PowerPoint, plus meeting tools like the Facilitator agent, real-time catchup, Intelligent recap and Copilot Pages.

• Agents: choosing a prebuilt or custom agent, and using Microsoft Copilot Cowork to delegate multi-step tasks, review its plan and manage scheduled tasks.

Exam format, languages and retakes

The exam is offered in English, Arabic (Saudi Arabia), Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), French, German, Indonesian (Indonesia), Italian, Korean, Japanese, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian and Spanish. If your language is missing, Microsoft says you can request an additional 30 minutes.

Microsoft recommends registering with a personal Microsoft account. Work or school accounts can lose your exam records if you leave the organization.

Try the exam sandbox before test day. It shows the question types in the same interface you will use. Microsoft also points to a practice assessment on AI Skills Navigator, where you must be signed in.

• A delivered code is non-refundable, unless the test provider rejects it as invalid, already used or expired on first use.

A four-week study plan with weekly hours

This plan assumes you already use Microsoft 365 at work. It is a suggestion, not a Microsoft requirement. Plan about 20 hours in total, split roughly by exam weight.

If you have no Copilot access at work, add a few hours. The exam tests which tool fits which task, and that is hard to learn from reading alone.

Worked example: refining a prompt

The exam expects you to refine prompts based on responses. Practice this loop on a real task.

1. Start weak: "Summarize this report."

2. Add role, source and format: "You are a finance analyst. Using the attached Q3 report, list three risks for the leadership team in five bullets."

3. Check the output against the source. Look for invented figures or missing citations.

4. Refine: "Cite the page for each risk and remove anything not in the report."

5. Save the final prompt so you can reuse or share it.

Quick decision table for tool choice

The study guide asks you to know when to use Copilot Chat, agents and Cowork. This table is our own rule of thumb, so use it to test your judgment.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Memorizing instead of practicing. The study guide recommends hands-on experience. Open Copilot and do each listed task.

• Ignoring responsible AI. Prompt injection, over-reliance and sensitive data are named objectives.

• Studying old material. Skills are measured as of October 20, 2026. Check the study guide's date against any course you use.

• Trusting exam dumps. They break exam rules and often teach outdated answers. Use the sandbox and practice assessment instead.

• Skipping the proctoring setup. Test your room, ID and connection before exam day.

After you pass

Your credential appears on your Microsoft Learn profile, where you can share and print it. Microsoft's study guide says associate, expert and specialty certifications expire annually and can be renewed with a free online assessment.
